Cake sizes and servings guide

"How big a cake do I need?" is one of the first questions people ask. Use this guide as a starting point; we will confirm the right size when you order.

How servings are counted

Party slices are about the width of two fingers and the height of the cake. Wedding portions are smaller, cut as finger-sized rectangles, so the same cake feeds more people at a wedding than at a birthday.

Round cakes (approximate)

Diameter Party slices Wedding portions
6 inch 8 to 12 about 14
8 inch 14 to 20 about 24
10 inch 24 to 30 about 38
12 inch 34 to 40 about 56

Kilograms vs servings

Many Kenyan bakeries sell cakes by the kilogram. A kilogram is a weight, not a size, so a dense fruit cake and a light sponge of the same weight will look very different. We find it clearer to talk about servings.

Tiered cakes

Add up the servings of each tier. A 10-inch, 8-inch and 6-inch tiered cake gives roughly 75 wedding portions. A plain sheet cake kept in the kitchen is an economical way to feed a big guest list.
