A graduation cake has a harder job than most. It has to look good in a hundred photos, feed relatives who drove in from three counties, and survive a party that often runs from a tent in the afternoon into the evening. Many universities and colleges hold their ceremonies towards the end of the year, so if someone in your family is finishing at Machakos, Nairobi or anywhere in between, here is how to plan the cake without a last-week scramble.
Book as soon as the ceremony date is confirmed
Graduation dates cluster. When a big institution graduates thousands of students on the same weekend, every baker in the area gets the same requests at the same time. Once the date is official, send your enquiry, even if you haven't settled on a design. A date held early is easier to work with than a perfect idea sent four days before.
Remember too that the party is not always on the ceremony day. Many families hold the celebration the following weekend at home, which makes delivery easier and gives the graduate a day to recover. Tell us the party date, not just the ceremony date.
Plan for the guests who actually turn up
Graduation parties grow. Neighbours, church friends and the graduate's classmates arrive alongside the people you invited. Count the guests you expect, then add a margin. Our cake sizes and servings guide turns that number into a size.
If the crowd is large, a smaller decorated cake for the cutting and photos, with plain sheet cake or cupcakes to serve everyone, keeps the cost down without anyone missing a slice. It is the same approach many couples use at weddings, and it works just as well here.
Designs that photograph well
The cake will be photographed beside a gown and a certificate, so a few details matter more than elaborate decoration:
- The institution's colours. Gown and hood colours vary by university and by degree. Send a photo of the actual gown rather than describing the colour, because "maroon" means different things to different people.
- The name and the qualification. Check the spelling of the graduate's name and the exact wording, for example "BCom" or "Bachelor of Commerce". This is the most common thing families want changed after an order is confirmed.
- A mortarboard or scroll topper. These are the classic touches. A topper can be lifted off and kept, which many graduates like.
- A nod to the course. A stethoscope for a nursing graduate, a set of scales for law, a small laptop for IT. One well-made detail says more than five crowded ones.
Choose a flavour for a mixed crowd
Graduation guests range from grandparents to small children. Vanilla and chocolate are safe choices that most people finish. If the graduate has a favourite, a two-tier cake can carry two flavours, so they get theirs and the crowd gets something familiar. Tell us about any allergies when you order; our kitchen handles wheat, dairy, eggs and nuts.
Outdoor parties and the afternoon sun
Most graduation parties in this region happen outdoors or under a tent, and the hottest part of the day is usually when the cake is on display. A few habits keep it looking the way it did when it left our kitchen:
- Keep the cake boxed and in the coolest room of the house until about an hour before cutting.
- Set it on a flat, steady table in the shade, never in direct sun or beside the cooking area.
- Avoid designs that depend on soft whipped cream if the party is outdoors on a hot afternoon. Buttercream and fondant hold their shape better, and we can suggest finishes that suit the setting.
- Cut and serve soon after the photos rather than leaving the cake out for the whole afternoon.
Getting the cake to the party
You can collect from our kitchen in Machakos (see Visit) or have the cake delivered. We deliver to fifteen towns, including Athi River, Syokimau, Kangundo and Nairobi. If the party is at a rural home, send a pinned location and a landmark, and give us a phone number that someone at the venue will actually answer on the day.
What to send with your enquiry
To get a quote quickly, include:
- The party date, the town and whether you want delivery or collection.
- Roughly how many guests you are planning for.
- A photo of the gown, plus any design pictures you like.
- The graduate's name and qualification, spelled exactly as you want them on the cake.
- Your preferred flavour and your budget.
Read our booking policies before you confirm, then start a graduation cake enquiry. We will come back with a design suggestion and a price.
Questions we get asked
When should I order a graduation cake?
As soon as the ceremony or party date is confirmed. Graduation weekends are busy, so an early enquiry gives you the best chance of your date.
Can the cake match my university colours?
Yes. Send a photo of the actual gown and hood so we can match the colours closely.
