Christmas Cakes in Kenya 2026: Pre-Order Guide

Updated October 2026

If you want a Christmas cake in Kenya this year without a last-minute scramble, the answer is simple: pre-order early. December is the busiest month for Kenyan bakers, with Christmas, family reunions, weddings, ruracio ceremonies, graduations and office parties all landing in the same few weeks. At Norie's Cake Atelier in Machakos, festive cakes start at KES 2,500 for 1kg, and a 50% M-Pesa deposit locks in your date. Here is how to plan it.

When to pre-order your Christmas cake

Our standard notice is 3 days for a simple cake and 7 days for a custom design, but December dates fill up long before that. As a guide:

  • Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (24-25 December): book by the end of November if you can.
  • Boxing Day and family reunions (26-31 December): book at least two weeks ahead.
  • New Year's Eve and New Year's Day: book by mid-December.
  • Multi-tier cakes for December weddings: 3 to 4 weeks minimum, earlier is better.

Date changes are free with 72 hours' notice, so booking early does not lock you in if plans move. The deposit itself is non-refundable.

Festive flavours that work for Christmas

Many families in Kenya serve a sponge or layer cake rather than a traditional dark fruit cake at Christmas, because children and guests of all ages enjoy it. From our menu, these suit the season well:

  • Red velvet (Signature, KES 2,800 per kg): the classic festive red, with cream cheese frosting as an add-on.
  • Carrot with cream cheese (Premium, KES 3,400 per kg): warm and spiced.
  • Chocolate fudge or chocolate caramel (Premium, KES 3,200 per kg): a family crowd-pleaser.
  • Coffee mocha or hazelnut chocolate (Trendy, KES 3,000 and 3,500 per kg): for adults after a long Christmas lunch.
  • Biscoff (Trendy, KES 3,300 per kg): its caramelised biscuit flavour fits the season.

Ask us on WhatsApp if you want a specific traditional cake; we will tell you honestly whether it is something we bake.

How much cake for a Christmas gathering?

Kenyan Christmas lunches tend to be big. A 1kg cake serves roughly 8 to 12 people, so a family of 20 needs about 2kg. If relatives keep arriving through the day, add a box of cupcakes (6 classic for KES 850, 12 for KES 1,650) or cinnamon rolls rather than ordering a much bigger cake. Our cake sizes and servings guide has more detail.

Christmas pastries and gift boxes

If you are visiting family upcountry or thanking neighbours, pastry boxes travel better than a cake: brownies (box of 6 from KES 850), stuffed cookies (box of 6 for KES 1,000), mini cinnamon rolls (box of 6 for KES 800) or a box of 6 assorted doughnuts (KES 750).

Travelling upcountry with a cake

If you are driving from Nairobi or Machakos to the village for Christmas, choose a buttercream cake without tall decorations, keep it in the coolest part of the car and avoid leaving it in a parked car in the sun. For long journeys, a sturdy flavour such as chocolate fudge or carrot travels better than one with fresh fruit or delicate toppers.

Pickup and delivery in December

Pickup is at Machakos Celebration Centre. Delivery in Machakos town is KES 300 to 500; Athi River, Syokimau, Kitengela and Nairobi are priced by distance. December traffic on Mombasa Road is heavy, so we agree delivery windows when you book.
