A ruracio cake marks the moment two families come together, and at many Kenyan dowry ceremonies it is cut alongside the shared meal. Norie's Cake Atelier bakes ruracio cakes to order in Machakos from KES 2,500 per kg, and delivers to homes and venues. Whether you call it ruracio, ngurario, or a Kamba dowry ceremony (ntheo), the planning is similar: big family numbers, a home setting and a cake that can wait in the sun without wilting.
How big should a ruracio cake be?
Ruracio guest lists are often large and unpredictable, with aunts, uncles, elders and neighbours. Allow about 1kg per 8 to 12 guests for dessert portions. For 80 guests, that is roughly 7 to 10kg. A practical approach is a 2kg to 4kg display cake plus cupcakes or brownies in boxes, which are easy to share and to send home with elders.
Design ideas
- The couple's names or "Welcome to the family" on an acrylic topper (KES 250).
- Colours matching the families' outfits or the décor theme.
- Fresh flowers (KES 400 to 800) and gold leaf (KES 300) for an elegant look.
- An edible photo print of the couple (KES 500).
Flavours that suit a family crowd
Vanilla, chocolate fudge and red velvet are safe choices for all ages. If grandparents prefer something lighter, lemon or pineapple from our Classic range works well.
Timing and delivery
Book at least 7 days ahead for a custom design, or 3 to 4 weeks if the cake is tiered. Ruracio is often at the bride's family home, sometimes up a rough road. Tell us the exact location and road conditions and name someone to receive the cake. Delivery in Machakos town is KES 300 to 500; elsewhere by distance.
Engagement, ngurario and wedding
Many families order cakes for several ceremonies in the same year. Planning the wedding too? See wedding cakes in Machakos and the wedding cake budget planner.
Pastries to go with the cake
For bigger groups or a dessert table, our pastry menu stretches a cake further: classic cupcakes KES 150 each (box of 6 for KES 850, 12 for KES 1,650), signature cupcakes KES 200, classic fudge brownies KES 150, loaded brownies KES 200, stuffed cookies KES 180, cinnamon rolls KES 250, glazed doughnuts KES 100, and dessert cups such as tiramisu, Biscoff cheesecake, tres leches and banana pudding at KES 300 each (box of 4 for KES 1,100). Keeping the cake in good shape
- Carry the box flat on the floor of the car or on a level seat, never on a lap or by the sides.
- Keep it out of direct sun; buttercream softens quickly on a hot dashboard.
- If the event is many hours away, refrigerate the cake and take it out about 30 minutes before serving.
- Name one person to receive the cake and check it on arrival.
Allergies and dietary needs
Our cakes and pastries contain gluten, eggs and dairy, and may contain nuts. Please tell us about any allergy when you order. We would rather tell you honestly that something is not suitable than risk a guest's health.
